Oak & Boar Beard Brush

A handle turned in Lunenburg, set with first-cut boar bristle.

The military-style brush that lives on the shelf beside the chair. The handle is white oak from the same Lunenburg mill that supplied the shop's floor, turned to fit a palm and finished in tung oil so it darkens rather than chips.

The knot is first-cut boar: stiff enough to carry oil to the skin through a full beard, soft enough at the tips not to scratch. It is the brush Maren uses to train a beard to lie the way you want it to.

Materials

  • White oak — hard, tight-grained and gets handsomer with handling
  • First-cut boar bristle — natural, holds and distributes oil
  • Tung-oil finish — no varnish to peel
  • Brass ferrule pins holding the bristle pad

Each handle is turned individually; the grain will differ from the one pictured.

Care

  1. Brush the beard dry first, then again after oil, always with the grain.
  2. Tap out loose hair after each use; wash the bristles in warm water and mild soap once a month.
  3. Dry bristle-down on a cloth. Keep the oak away from standing water.

Rub a drop of beard oil into the handle every few months to feed the finish.
