What keeps the Koken chair and the aprons looking like this.

The restored 1950s Koken chair in the shop is re-covered in cognac leather that gets sat in forty times a week. This is what keeps it supple: a balm of beeswax, neatsfoot oil and a little lanolin, worked in with a horsehair brush on Monday mornings when the shop is closed.

The kit is the same balm and brush, with two cotton cloths, rolled in waxed canvas. It suits the aprons, a good pair of boots, a belt, a bag — anything in smooth full-grain leather that deserves another decade.

For smooth full-grain and top-grain leather. Not for suede, nubuck or napped finishes. Balm may darken light leather; test on a hidden spot first.

How to use

  1. Brush the leather clean and let it come to room temperature.
  2. Warm a little balm on the first cloth and work it in with small circles; less is more.
  3. Leave it twenty minutes, then buff with the dry cloth until the shine comes back.

Twice a year is plenty for most pieces; a chair that works every day gets it monthly.
